Scene/Non-Scene

A major distinction in UCCA is between scene-evoking phrases and non-scene-evoking ones.

Participant nsubj

Noun subjects, and core syntactic arguments in general, are predominately UCCA Participants. in the following, wine is both nsubj and Participant, as it is not a scene-evoking noun, but participates in the excellent scene:

UD:
# visual-style nodes red # visual-style 3 1 nsubj color:red # sent_id = reviews-305187-0005 # text = Wine was excellent. 1 Wine wine NOUN NN Number=Sing 3 nsubj _ _ 2 was be AUX VBD Mood=Ind|Number=Sing|Person=3|Tense=Past|VerbForm=Fin 3 cop _ _ 3 excellent excellent ADJ JJ Degree=Pos 0 root _ SpaceAfter=No 4 . . Process nsubj

In contrast, in the following, the noun subject service is scene-evoking, and corresponds to a UCCA Process:

Linker nsubj

Non-scene-evoking nouns can also correspond to UCCA Linkers, as in the following example, where the relative pronoun who is a noun subject but serves as a Linker between two Parallel Scenes.

UD:

Adverbial amod

Adjectives can be scene-evoking or not. Different classes of adjectives are handled differently in UCCA: e.g., while most adjectives are scene-evoking, pertainyms (academic), inherent-composition modifiers (sugary), and quantity modifiers (many) are not. Some adjectives are ambiguous: a legal practice may refer to a behavior that is legal as opposed to illegal, in which case it should be scene-evoking, or to a law office, in which case it should not. In the following, perfect evokes a scene and is annotated as a State, whereas romantic does not evoke a scene and is instead an Adverbial in the dinner scene.

UD:

State amod

Another example for a scene-evoking adjective follows, where the adjective beautiful is annotated as a State.

Similarly, convenient in the following sentence evokes a State:

Prepositions are mostly Relators, modifying non-scenes, such as at modifying Bradley Chevron in the following. On the other hand, the preposition for is a Linker between the Paralell Scenes corresponding to running and death.

Primary/Secondary Relations

Another major distinction in UCCA is between primary relations (Process/State), secondary relations (Adverbials) and Participants.

Adverbial advmod

Adverbs are typically Adverbials, although not necessarily so. In the following, sometimes is such as example:

UD:
# visual-style nodes red # visual-style 3 2 advmod color:red # sent_id = reviews-241855-0002 # text = I sometimes go into this store just for something to do on a sunday afternoon. 1 I I PRON PRP Case=Nom|Number=Sing|Person=1|PronType=Prs 3 nsubj _ _ 2 sometimes sometimes ADV RB _ 3 advmod _ _ 3 go go VERB VBP Mood=Ind|Tense=Pres|VerbForm=Fin 0 root _ _ 4 into into ADP IN _ 6 case _ _ 5 this this DET DT Number=Sing|PronType=Dem 6 det _ _ 6 store store NOUN NN Number=Sing 3 obl _ _ 7 just just ADV RB _ 9 advmod _ _ 8 for for ADP IN _ 9 case _ _ 9 something something PRON NN Number=Sing 3 obl _ _ 10 to to PART TO _ 11 mark _ _ 11 do do VERB VB VerbForm=Inf 9 acl _ _ 12 on on ADP IN _ 15 case _ _ 13 a a DET DT Definite=Ind|PronType=Art 15 det _ _ 14 sunday sunday PROPN NNP Number=Sing 15 compound _ _ 15 afternoon afternoon NOUN NN Number=Sing 11 obl _ SpaceAfter=No 16 . . Participant advmod

Adverbs can also be Participants if they designate a location:

Adverbial obl

On the other hand, oblique modifiers of predicates (introduced by prepositions) can also be Adverbials. They serve a similar role to adverbs, but are distinguished in UD due to the syntactic realization. For example by far in the following is an Adverbial functioning as an oblique modifier:
